Brighton Bungaroosh, Remodeling of typical Brighton 1860’s terrace

This full refurbishment of an end-of-terrace property in Brighton transformed a constrained layout into a bright, contemporary living space while overcoming significant structural challenges typical of bungaroosh construction. Early investigations revealed defects affecting structural integrity and load distribution, requiring a carefully engineered solution that balanced modern design with sound construction principles.

Due to restricted access through the hallway, structural support was introduced using a bolted steel beam system, installed to stabilise the existing structure. A new timber stud wall was constructed above the supporting beam, which bears onto reinforced pad foundations at either end, ensuring safe load transfer and long-term performance.

To maximise natural light and improve spatial flow, the rear elevation was opened with a 1400mm French door installation and large Velux roof windows. These elements flood the interior with daylight while strengthening the visual connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

The layout was refined to retain the utility area, allowing the creation of a functional home office — an increasingly valuable feature for modern living. Externally, a compact patio garden was professionally landscaped, featuring timber decking that seamlessly links to the larch-clad rear façade, delivering warmth, texture, and architectural cohesion.
