Rio Tinto Brisbane HQ - Organic Strata-Led Workspace Design, 2012
In 2012, working alongside Geyer Australia we developed a comprehensive strata mining design strategy for Rio Tinto’s Brisbane office, creating a multi-level workspace that balances functionality, visual identity, and user experience. The design defines distinct floor identities from the core reception level to Level 13, where a dynamic breakout zone and café hub serve as social and collaborative focal points.
Each floor features a combination of breakout spaces, private consultation areas, and bump zones, supporting flexible working and team interaction. Natural materials paired with aluminium cladding provide a modern, durable aesthetic, while ceiling treatments exposing the underside of slabs and ductwork add depth, texture, and a unique industrial character. Thoughtful layout planning ensures clear sightlines and intuitive orientation, guiding occupants effortlessly throughout the building.
The result is a strategically layered, engaging workspace interior that integrates corporate identity, collaboration, and efficient workflow across 13 levels.
